East Gonja Chiefs angry with assembly members for voting against president’s candidate

Fifteen (15) traditional chiefs from the municipality of East Gonja in the Savannah region expressed their anger against twenty-five (25) members of the Assembly who voted against the President’s candidate for MCE, Mohammed Tamimu.

The chiefs, led by the supreme chief of the traditional Kpembe zone, Kpembiwura Dari Bismark Haruna, said assembly members, despite several appeals and mediations, continued to humiliate them (the chiefs) by rejecting the candidate for the second time in a row.

The candidate, Mr. Mohammed Tamimu began his political career with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2004 as a constituency secretary appointed for two consecutive terms. This happened after he crossed the carpet of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He was later appointed chief of the municipal executive of East Gonja by President Akufo-Addo and was reappointed for a second term, but was twice rejected by members of the assembly.

Mr. Tamimu obtained 10 of the 34 votes cast by members in the first instance. But he was reappointed by President Akufo-Addo, which earned him just nine votes.

But the chiefs are not happy with the outcome because of the role they played in the mediation process.

“Let me state unequivocally that my elders and I know you very well, the malcontents among us. Believe me, at the appropriate time, I will publish the names of these malcontents with empirical evidence implicating them for all to know and see, if they do not turn a new leaf, ”Kpembewura Haruna insisted.

The Supreme Leader added: “with great concern, I consider this unfortunate conduct to be a great disappointment, disrespectful and humiliating for myself, my elders and, by extension, the president of the country who has done us a lot of honor as that people and, therefore, does not deserve that at all ”.

Kpembewura Dari Bismark Haruna before becoming chief was the chief of the district executive for the same assembly, so does not understand why, despite an amicable agreement with the members of the assembly, they still rejected the candidate of the President.

He said that prior to the confirmation process, a stakeholder engagement session involving religious leaders and his deputy chiefs, among others, was held with the understanding that all grievances had been addressed for confirmation of the candidate, to be told otherwise.

The statement which was read by a deputy chief, Lepowura MND Jawula, also gave members of the assembly the opportunity to apologize to the chiefs and the traditional zone or face rejection and humiliation. .

“My Deputy Chiefs and on my own behalf, as well as the entire Traditional Zone, wish to emphatically point out that, given this turn of events, we will completely withdraw our support and cooperation from all future efforts of the municipality. Assembly if the actors of this bad faith do not apologize unreservedly to us, and by extension, to the President of the field, and also agree to strictly respect the agreement concluded during the engagement of the stakeholders ”.

Kpembewura Dari Bismark Haruna also reassured President Akufo-Addo of his skin’s unwavering support to enable him (the President) to pursue his vision for the region.
