Iveco and Nikola launch electric truck joint venture in Germany – Fuel Smarts

The partnership announced last September between global Italian-based commercial truck maker Iveco and U.S. zero-emission truck maker Nikola has entered a new phase with the September 15 unveiling of an electric heavy-duty truck manufacturing plant Nikola Tre .

Joint venture partners said the factory, located in Ulm, Germany, will start production of Nikola Tre electric heavy-duty trucks by the end of the year.

The first Nikola Tre models produced in Germany will be delivered to selected customers in the United States in 2022.

In addition to this battery-electric vehicle (BEV) production model, the partners said that the “next evolution of this modular heavy-duty platform is also being presented to the public in the form of the prototype battery-electric vehicle. Nikola Tre ‘fuel (FCEV), which is expected to go into production at Ulm by the end of 2023.

Spanning 50,000 square meters (almost 60,000 square meters), half of which is covered, the Ulm plant has a final assembly process designed for “electric” vehicles.

The production line is currently expected to be able to manufacture around 1,000 units per shift per year and is expected to ramp up gradually in the following years, the partners said.

The new site, and the first full industrialization phase, represents a joint investment by Iveco and Nikola and involves a 160-supplier project in the process from start to finish, the manufacturers noted.

“Together, the teams designed a modular platform capable of using fuel cells as well as battery propulsion technologies,” said Nikola and Iveco. “Launching battery technology in the first place will lead to maturity of the underlying platform before adding the fuel cell as a line extension technology. “
