Outspan Nigeria Limited (ONL), the dairy company of Olam Food Ingredients (ofi), announced a foot-and-mouth disease vaccination exercise for 1,500 dairy cattle in the Dawakin Tofa local government area in the state of Kano.
The vaccination exercise is carried out in partnership with the Kano Dairy and Livestock Cooperative Union (KADALCU) which brings together more than 70,000 small dairy farmers.
The exercise aims to improve livestock health management and increase the level of milk production in the state.
ONL Director Kano, Mr. Ahmed Adetunji, who represented Olam’s National Director of Sales Operations, Mr. Vipin Patel, said, âWe continue to deepen our involvement in the local dairy value chain by engaging large numbers of smallholder farmers to facilitate the improvement of agricultural practices in the value chain, while injecting the necessary investment funds to develop local dairy production.
âThe vaccination exercise will remove constraints related to the health management of dairy cattle that directly affect the level of productivity of livestock and, by extension, increase the quantity and quality of milk produced locally. “
Adetunji added that in addition to the recent 1,000-cow insemination exercise in the state, the opening of a new milk collection center to preserve the quality of locally produced milk and training of small dairy farmers on the adoption of modern agricultural practices, all sponsored According to the ONL, “the vaccination exercise against foot-and-mouth disease, considered fatal in cattle, should accelerate the achievement of dairy self-sufficiency in the country”.
The President of the Kano Dairy Union, Mr. Usman Abdullahi Usman, and a dairy consultant, Mr. Celestine Ayok, who were present at the event, thanked ONL for its contribution to the growth aspirations of the dairy value chain. .
