Plumbing Manufacturers International Welcomes California Adoption of Industry Lead Testing Requirement for Certified Drinking Water Devices

SACRAMENTO, California, October 10, 2021– (COMMERCIAL THREAD) –International plumbing manufacturers (PMI) congratulates California Governor Gavin Newsom and the California State Legislature for enacting Assembly Bill (AB) 100. Written by Assembly Member Chris Holden, AB 100 passes the 2020 NSF / ANSI / CAN 61 industry standard as a lead testing requirement for certified drinking water devices sold in California.

Developed by the Joint Committee on Drinking Water Additives – System Components facilitated by NSF International, NSF / ANSI / CAN 61 2020 was released last year as the new industry standard for the amount of lead may leak plumbing products during testing. The standard reduces the allowable amount of lead leached in product testing by five times, from Q ≤ 5 micrograms (mcg) previously allowed to Q ≤ 1 mcg. One mcg is equal to one millionth of a gram. In comparison, a grain of salt is 60 times larger than 1 mcg.

“It is gratifying to see California adopt the NSF 61 requirement and validate the remarkable work of the committee,” said Kerry Stackpole, CEO / Executive Director of PMI. “California’s adoption of this industry standard marks another innovative step in our industry’s continued quest to provide water efficient, high performance plumbing products.

Products meeting the new requirement will be marked “NSF / ANSI / CAN 61: Q ≤ 1”

Products conforming to the NSF / ANSI / CAN 61 2020 standard adopted by California will be marked “NSF / ANSI / CAN 61: Q ≤ 1” next to the scannable barcode of the product on the packaging; this mention may also be accompanied by the logo of the plumbing product certifier. The NSF 61 standard for manufacturers will become mandatory in California on January 1, 2023, under the new law, and in the rest of the United States and Canada on January 1, 2024. Products meeting the standard are available on the market as of now. . the PMI web page, How to buy a low lead faucet or drinking water device, helps consumers identify these compliant products.

Stackpole noted that most of the lead in drinking water comes from lead service lines connecting homes and business properties to water lines, not from plumbing fixtures and fittings. PMI supports the infrastructure bill currently before the US Congress; the bill provides $ 45 billion for the removal of lead pipes across the country.

The standard has been approved by the Council of Public Health Consultants and ratified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), in accordance with their standards development processes. The joint committee is made up of a balanced representation from the regulatory / public health, manufacturing and consumer sectors.
